Another one of my cars, I've had this for aaaages (got a soft spot for S12s) because it popped up at the right price and it was the exact one i wanted (coupe, SGL, all options except auto). Got it back in 2011 i think.
Anyways finally got it on the road as a daily last year (i daily a bike usually, but good to have a car too), bit smokey but all good.
A year later and now it's really smokey (not surprising with near 400,000km on it), so i picked up a spare motor from a bloke nearby and rebuilt that.
The plan is build the motor and later on low blow turbo (5psi, 7psi max) just to pep it up slightly. I don't need the car to be super fast or anything like that (I have my Silvia for that...if i ever get it back on the road haha!), so it's more like a bit of a restore, a bit of a mod but all in all keep it as OEM looking as possible under the bonnet.
How it looked just prior to going back on the road (driving mum around the back yard haha). Got the wheels when i lived in Japan about 10 years ago in anticipation of having an S12 again one day.

Anyone know what causes that strange wear pattern at the top of the bores?

Test fit CA18ET turbo manifold, with CA18DET turbo. This is all for later, for now it'll be stock until it's run in and then i'll get the electronic side of the turbo stuff worked out, and then finally the turbo.

So this is where it's at as of yesterday, rebuilt engine in, just fiddling around with a few bits and pieces and it's good to go.

Anyways CA18ET manifold, CA18ET turbo rocker cover badge, CA18DET turbo.
Many thanks to the friendly American who gave me the CA18ET parts!

very sweet build and should go very nicely with low boost
sorry I couldnt find the pic of the 320hp one from the UK
However Im sure 150hp will be easy and more importantly
160lbs of torque to get those back wheels squealing together.
(Im guessing you didnt use 4g63 rods with narrowed big ends?)

Nah i went with a totally stock rebuild (apart from the crank brace and DET sump) this time around, since i have two CA20s now (i rebuilt a spare one, and swapped them over) i figured i could play around with the spare one at my leasure. I have my engine stand back from the mate who's had it for years so i'll stick it on the stand, work out the rods and all that kind of stuff on that motor, look at porting the head, all that kind of stuff.
I have been keeping an eye out for second hand stock 4g63 rods, figure they will be pleeeenty strong enough and i won't have to pay as many dollar bucks for them.
Meanwhile the one in the car can chug away at 5psi (when i get that part of it going!)
And when i get my adjustable rear links in.
And when i fit that LSD.
And when i finish the coilovers.
And all the other stuff haha!

Step by step will be a good keeper and love those wheels nothing suits it better
and always wanted those wheels on an old r30 coupe or r31.
The valve sizes for inlet I think are the same as factory z18et and the exhaust
was just a tad smaller if I recall. Good to know it will make similar hp at 12-18psi.

Yeah those are the wheels for it, i bought a few sets when i was in Japan and kept the sizes i wanted, nothing too crazy (14x7 and 14x7.5) but good offsets for it.
Will be a touch lower when it's on coilovers but not too much.
I've got a Mk1 front lip for it in the shed too but the front bumper is actually slightly bent currently so i've not fitted it yet (every s12 i've had seems to have had a light hit on the nose actually!).
A few FJ hood scoop bonnets have come up over time but they've always been too expensive for stingy old me. I actually had one years ago i got really cheap but i sold it to a mate in the end (after I sold all my s12s back in the day).
I do recall the valve sizes being fairly large considering what the base motor was designed to do (A to B driving), if it makes 100whp it'll be well up on what it makes standard (100 at the flywheel roughly), so that's kind of my ballpark, that'd be fine i reckon. The S12 is still relatively light at 1180kg so should get along ok. If that all goes really well then i'll be pretty motivated to make the spare motor betterer for more boost. They say the rods are weak although a guy in Brisbane did make a CA20DET using stock CA20 rods (shot peened) and he made around 200rwkw and as far as i know it's not blown up.

Yep seems shot peened rods were fine at 6k rpm with 10-12psi but the process costs the same as a second hand set of 4g63 rods with the BEs machined as needed :) Never heard anything bad about the pistons but you could likely get away with sr20det or rb26det 86mm pistons or oversize 4g63 8v or 16v pistons.

Just now could not believe this escaped me but looking at the 8v mitsu 4g63 head cannot believe how close it is to the ca20e head

they are belt driven bores are 85mm and a 16v soch version is available! wished I knew about this earlier provided cyi head spacing match

Yeah, we have a machine shop at work so tinkering with OEM 4G63 rods wouldn't be a problem.
I'd stick to the single cam 20e head, just to keep everything simple outside the motor, don't have to play with manifolds or exhaust or intake or anything if i build a motor. Just swap them over.
The CA18et can make a decent amount of power on the same head so if needed do a bit of work to the 20e head and run a bit more boost and see how it goes.
All far in the future but it doesn't need to be a massive powerhouse, I've got the S13 with SR if i want to go faster.
I've got plenty of bits for the SR that i've not even fitted yet, GTSS turbo, poncams, 555s. It makes (or made last time i had it on the road haha) 190rwkw as is and that was pretty fun back in the day, if it made 215rwkw with the extra bits and a new tune that'd be plenty.
Hell after not having driven it for ages i'm sure 190rwkw will feel like stacks haha!

Finished off all the bits and pieces, changed my clutch slave since the old one was leaking and took it for a test drive.
Seems all is good!
Now I've just got to work out where and when to take it for a drive to break it in some, in traffic commuting in Brisbane seems like a bad way to go about that haha!
Also fitted some adjustable rear links I made up a while ago, just set at standard lengths for now but shouldn't tighten up the rear and and after I've lowered it a touch more i'll set the pinion angle.

Painted my coilover bits last night.
Basically i've made up a bunch of bits to adapt S13 coilovers into the S12.
Up front threaded tubes welded to the OEM stub axle.
Out back parts to split the coilover out into a spring section and a shock section and keep them both adjustable.
Just used cheapo coilovers but if they turn out to be crap i'll pull them apart and use different shocks in the bodies.
You can just put all S13 stuff (stub axles, brakes etc) up front (which i've done before in one of my old S12s) but i wanted this to be basically a straight swap onto the existing car, and the S13 stuff does increase the track slightly which i can't really afford to do with my wheels.
