Hey everyone, just wondering what people have done about immobilisers, alarms, remote entry for our dattos. I was thinking about this the other day and would like to have a kit that I can set up to have remote entry on all four doors, along with central locking if I ever need to open with key (not a necessity but would be cool), and when the car is locked and unlocked and immobiliser to the ignition circuit is operated accoringly..was looking at jaycar stuff recently. what have you guys done?

I bought a wireless central locking kit from jaycar.

Kits are quiet reasonably priced and quality is just as good as all others.

I have some DIY immobilisers wiring diagrams at home, that a mate forwarded to me. Essentially its a relay pack that you wire to particulars around the vehicle. Good for the carby engine datos. Myself, as I have an efi engine in mine, I can use it to lock out the ecu and various items.

In the end though, if someones going to steal it, they will, no matter what you've got.

I just wanted the keyless entry function for mine.

Good luck.

I'd consider some more secure locks when my car is actually worth breaking into.

I wouldn't bother with an alarm as people just ignore them these days. Plus, I can set off some aftermarket car alarms with my exhaust.

As for an immobilizer, I just remove the rotor button from the dizzy.

yeh still not sure whether to go immobilizer or not..as James May said remove rotor button is the easiest option I doubt a potential thief would be carrying one around with him. also could throw in a kill switch to drop out essentials like coil power and starter solenoid..

I think having remote keyless entry would be cool though no one would expect it

Keyless entry is more about convenience rather than security. If you want it, go for it.

It does save your from accidentally scratching your own car in the dark though... not that I've done that...

My pops old Subie (Leone) had a mad security tweak.

To start it you had to touch a specific bolt under the dash while cranking the engine.

Using your body as a switch you can wire that bolt up anywhere you can reach in the cab.

Cool as I thought, never tried setting it up though.

Alarm and immobiliser has saved my beast a couple of times. Once they smashed the drivers window and looks like they got scared off by the alarm, second time the alarm didn't scare them off but they couldn't start it so left it alone. Replacing an ignition barrel and a window is better than your whole car!

That's awesome! How did you discover you had to do it in the first place? Trial and error?

Nah I was allowed to move it around by 14 so they showed me how it worked.

It is cool though.

glad I came across this post, because I wanted to ask about gps install. has anyone done it and how much? very common install these days. not the cheapest but almost guranteed to get your ride back.

I dont really agree with the opinion that if some thief really wants your car, they will get it. I apply that theory to mag wheels not the car itself. So taking the rotor button out is, as I see it, 99% effective. You cant seriously believe that in the 60 something adrenalin pumping seconds you have to steal a car, you are gonna work out that the rotor button is missing after you've bypassed the alarm and hot wired the ignition, let alone carry the right button if you figure it out.
other ideas to consider...
1. quick release steering wheel (only removed when convenient). I bet my mother that thieves dont carry a steering wheel to suit your car or could drive you ride home with a pair of extra wide vice grips.
2. like the devilshand, using your body as the earth on an inconspicuous bolt etc
3. a kill switch to fuel pump
4. having some part of the ecu loom attached to a relay, remove it when leaving. better than carrying a steering wheel.
5. taking an engine part everytime you leave like rotor button, plug lead, make a removable section of your crank angle sensor wiring, make your earth strap on battery as short as possible and take that.

some of the ideas may seem stupid, or become tedious very quickly, but really, who f$cking cares. you ride is still in the carpark when you finish the shopping. price you pay for having a wanted asset.

also something important to consider, any method you use should really be kept as quiet as you can from anyone else. even your best mate. all it takes is one drunk or over loud slip up about how to start your ride and it's back to public transport for you.

If somebody really wants to take your car then they will, not one of the methods you mention stop a person from dragging your car on to a tow truck, more cars a stolen in this way than you may think.

Yeah, I guess it's hard to protect against that. Short of putting a wheel clamp on the car and dyna-bolting that into the road, there's really not much you can do.

My cars well the auto ones have a nifty device that locks the transmission. Its not one hundred percent unstealable but you cant roll the car when its stuck in park.
