hey guys,

my car (1600) has the R31 rear disc brake setup, and the rear wheel studs don't seem to stick out as much as the fronts. There's still enough thread for the wheel nuts to tighten up properly, but it's still something I want to address.

Is this a common issue? What length studs should I replace them with and where is the best place to get some?

thanks in advance :)

I don't know what the front studs are that you are comparing them with.
Let me answer your Q this way: -
The R31 rear disc thickness is virtually the same as the OEM drum.

Soooo, with everything else being equal, the stud length available for the wheel nut should not change more than a mm or so.
Providing you can thread the wheel nut on, WITH THE WHEEL FITTED, to at least a distance equal to the diameter of the stud, 12.5mm, job done
Now there's the rub!
Steelies by design are only a couple of mm thick at the wheel stud hub, whereas an alloy wheel could have a stud area that may be 25mm thick.
So it is important to look at the whole package before doing anything to rectify.
Good cheap and readily available longer wheel studs can be had from the REAR of the R31 Skyline.
Check their length before scavenging/purchasing but they are usually 10mm longer than the common Nissan wheel stud.
Removing and replacing is fairly simple.

Don't go too long because you won't be able to maneuver the longer stud into the axle flange without pulling the stub axle

wow! thanks for all the info mate, you truly are a guru as it says under your name. So maybe it's just my front studs that are actually longer, and my rear studs are normal size? Interesting!

either way, thanks for the tip on the skyline studs, I'll look into it :)

here's a pic of mine for reference:

You can get studs from most auto places (Bursons, Repco, etc)
I've used 'Nice Products' studs in the past > http://www.niceproducts.com.au/catalogu ... /wheel.php

As Nissanman said, removal/installation is pretty easy.

Anth,
I also have R31 discs and need to get longer rear wheel studs to fit my SSR meshies. The wheel nuts only go on a few turns. So I'm leaning to what Nissanman said about the mounting face of the alloys being thicker than the steelies.

Just have to get off my a$$ and get them.

Iggy

Had a similar thing with my watanabe's.

Using stock wheel nuts they go on all the way, but longer studs would be a good idea in the long run to give that extra thread.
