Hi all,

Any thoughts on what this clatter might be? I'm hoping its the timing chain. I know the video isn't so great.

It is an intermittent noise, when you first start it up and it is idling nice and low there is no clatter but once it warms up and you give it a rev and let it return to idle a high pitched clatter starts up. It then goes away as you bring the revs up. It definately seems to be coming from inside the engine.

see how long the bolt that bolts the thermostat housing to the head is, could possibly be too long and the chain is rubbing it?
also check the gasket between the and of the exhaust manifold and where the exhaust starts, dont think it would be that but have a look anyway and make sure theres no air coming out of there..

It sounds like cam chain noise. You can use a long screwdriver with a metal shaft running completely through its handle as a "stethoscope". Place the blade end of the screwdriver on the timing case with the engine running. Listen by putting your ear to the handle end for a rattling sound being transferred through the screwdriver shaft. Careful you don't get the screw driver or your ear too close to the fan.

You can check for a stretched chain by checking the cam alignment mark on the the front cam bearing tower. A small "V" cut in the front cam tower assembly behind the cam sprocket, which aligns with a small slot cut in the cam bearing surface. If the slot is not visible in the "V", the chain is stretched.

You can replace the timing chain, guides and tensioner with the engine in the car, if you carefully remove the timing cover without damaging the head and sump gaskets.

Thanks for the help. The timing chain is due for renewal so that will be happening soon anyway and that should rectify the problem. I just bought the car and I am getting it ready to put it on the road.

take valve cover off and look down the fron and see if you see the tensioner(worn or cocked out) or a loose slack side guide. Sometimes the 10mm head bolt will bust. case a rattling chain or grinding sound.

If cheap most times the slack side guide and the tensioner is all that needs to be replaced
