What driving to you plan on doing? I found a marked improvement when I upgraded to my 5 speed on the open road as it was obviously quieter, long trips were more fuel efficient, and all round it just seemed easier to cruise with. The 4 speed is a bit lighter, better on fuel in and around town, and more vroom vroom to the tarmac. You thought about going the A15 route by chance? I did, never looked back. More bang, great little upgrade, and still an A series engine :)

In that case, you'll want to upgrade the box haha

hey man,

If you want a gearbox that'll bolt straight up that has 5 gears expect to pay close to 1000 dollars for one, as the a series 5 speeds are quite rare. I have heard of a few people modifying old celica 5 speeds to fit behind A series engines. I did a manual conversion on my 120y a few years ago and used a 4 speed 60 series, it has been flawless. You will struggle to blow a 60 series with just an a12, they are also still around for under a hundred bucks. Whatever you use you will be happy to ditch that power sucking auto.

 that's so refreshing to hear. Yes datsuns are rare and old but one of the best things about these cars are just how resilient they are. PLUS if you are driving a stock a12 and want to get close to anything that resembles "speed", you have to drive it like you hate it

Seconded. Quite hard to find an A-series 5 speed for a decent price, even more so one that doesn't require hundreds of bucks to rebuild... I was fortunate enough to pick mine up for $350 (NZ) in great working order.

Regarding the Celica box, the model some people have used as an alternative is the Toyota T50 transmission. They can also be found in some Corollas too. They don't just bolt in unfortunately (has a different bolt pattern for the bell-housing), but could be a viable alternative if you can source/manufacture your own adapter kit.

Do you reckon there would be a market for a conversion kit to adapt L-series 5 speed to the A-series ? Say, a modified bellhousing and input shaft for people to swap into an L-series box ?

If I understand what you're asking, the A15 is not the stock standard engine, so I would assume you will need to get it complied. Although, you could try and get away with it. The cops would need to know their stuff and be able to pick up the difference in size/height of the head and know to check for the engine model stamp on the block (usually gets covered up with grime over time). I poured roughly 5 grand into my A15 rebuild, and that was with mates rates...
